Privacy Policy
Last updated: July 2026
This Privacy Policy explains how Kitabun (the “App”, “Service”, “we”, “us”) — available on the web at kitabun.net and as mobile apps — collects, uses, stores, shares, retains, and deletes your information. We aim to collect as little as possible and to be transparent about it. By using Kitabun you agree to the practices described here.
Google & Apple account data (sign-in)
Kitabun offers optional sign-in with Google and Apple (handled via Google Firebase Authentication). This section discloses exactly how we handle the data we receive from those providers.
- Data accessed. When you sign in with Google, we access your name, email address, profile photo, and Google account identifier. When you sign in with Apple, we access your name and email address (or Apple’s private-relay email if you choose to hide your address). We never receive your Google or Apple password.
- How we use it. Solely to (a) authenticate you, (b) create and identify your Kitabun account, (c) sync your reading position, memorization sessions, bookmarks, and preferences across your devices, and (d) display your name and photo in the app. We do not use this data for advertising or profiling, and we do not use it to train AI/ML models.
- How we share it. This data is stored and processed by Google Firebase (Authentication and Cloud Firestore), acting as our data processor on our behalf. We do not sell it, and we do not share it with any other third parties except where required by law or valid legal process.
- Storage & protection. It is stored in Google Cloud Firestore under authenticated, access-controlled security rules, and transmitted over encrypted connections (HTTPS/TLS). We apply reasonable technical and organizational safeguards.
- Retention & deletion. We retain this data for as long as your account is active. You can delete individual memorization sessions and saved progress within the app, and you can request deletion of your account and all associated data by emailing support@kitabun.net; we will process such requests promptly.
Limited Use. Kitabun’s use and transfer of information received from Google APIs to any other app will adhere to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
1. Information we collect
- Account information — from your chosen sign-in provider (Google or Apple): name, email address, profile photo, and account identifier (see the section above).
- Reading & memorization data — when signed in, your last reading position, studied verses, memorization (Hifz) sessions and their automatically generated scores (e.g. fluency and tajweed indicators), and bookmarks, so they sync across your devices.
- Preferences — settings such as language, theme, reciter, translation, and view mode.
- Microphone input (memorization only) — when you use a speech-based memorization feature and grant permission (see Section 3).
- Newsletter email — if you submit your email to the subscribe form.
- Diagnostic data — technical error information to keep the App reliable.
2. How we use your information
- To provide core features: reading, audio playback, and memorization feedback.
- To sync your progress, bookmarks, and preferences across devices when you sign in.
- To authenticate you and keep your account secure.
- To send newsletter updates if you subscribed (you can opt out anytime).
- To diagnose issues and improve the App.
We do not sell your personal information and we do not use it for third-party advertising.
3. Microphone & speech recognition
Memorization features that listen to your recitation use your device’s microphone only while you are actively using that feature and only after you grant permission. Depending on platform, audio is processed by your device’s built-in speech-recognition service (mobile) or your browser’s speech-recognition service (web). Those services convert your speech to text and may transmit audio to the platform provider (such as Google or Apple) under their own privacy policies. Kitabun uses the resulting transcribed text transiently to compare against the verse and generate feedback. We do not store recordings of your voice on our servers. You can revoke microphone access anytime in your device or browser settings.
4. On-device & offline data
To enable offline use and improve performance, the App caches content, audio, fonts, and your settings locally on your device. This data stays on your device and can be cleared from the App’s Settings or by uninstalling the App.
5. Third-party services
We rely on Google Firebase (Authentication and Cloud Firestore) for sign-in and cloud storage, your chosen sign-in provider (Google or Apple), platform/browser speech-recognition services, and our hosting and content-delivery providers. These process data on our behalf or under their own policies. We encourage you to review their privacy policies.
6. Data sharing
We share personal information only as needed to operate the App (with the processors above), when required by law, or to protect the rights, safety, and security of our users and the Service. We do not sell your data.
7. Data retention & deletion
We keep account and progress data while your account is active. You can delete individual memorization sessions and saved progress within the App. To delete your account and all associated data, email support@kitabun.net and we will process your request. Newsletter emails are kept until you unsubscribe. On-device cached data persists until you clear it or uninstall the App.
8. Your rights & choices
- Access and update your basic profile and preferences in the App.
- Delete memorization sessions and saved progress in the App; request account/data deletion by email.
- Clear offline/cached data from Settings.
- Unsubscribe from the newsletter, or use the App without signing in.
- Revoke microphone permission via your device or browser settings.
Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights (access, correction, portability, erasure). Contact us using the details below to exercise them.
9. Children’s privacy
Kitabun is intended for a general, family-friendly audience. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children in a manner requiring verifiable parental consent under applicable law. If you believe a child provided us personal information without appropriate consent, contact us and we will remove it.
10. Security
We use reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect your information, including authenticated, access-controlled database rules and encrypted transport. However, no method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
11. International transfers
Our service providers may process and store data on servers in countries other than your own. Where that occurs, we rely on those providers’ safeguards to protect your information consistent with this policy and applicable law.
12. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the “Last updated” date above. Your continued use of the App after an update constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
13. Contact
